I heard about the Egyptian Antiquities Exhibit at my local library a while ago. Since then I've heard many people say how great it was going to be, so on the weekend I piled into my car with Kaidin and Adam and drove up to Perth to visit the Art Gallery of WA.
The exhibit is on tour from the Lourve. It cost about $50 for the three of us to get in plus the $12 parking we paid (I hate driving into the city, but until the train is connected, we really have not much choice).
And the exhibit was crap.
It didn't help that kaidin was whining that it was too dark and his feet were sore and he wanted to go to the museum to see the dinosaurs. Trying to introduce a 5 year old to culture when he has already endured an hour in the car plus a 20 minute walk through the city (good photos though - I like pretending to be a tourist) is a wasted exercise.
The gallery was packed and dark. There were some interesting scrolls along the walls, but if you stopped for more than 20 seconds you got jostled and sworn at by the people behind you. there were also no translations for anything other than the 'This is the tombstone of so and so'. there was a mummy cat and a mummy finger but no real mummies - this was what Kaidin had trouble grasping. Lots of mummy cases, no real bandage wrapped people.
Then mum rang and told us she needed Kaidin at her house in an hour and a half. I was glad of the excuse to leave, but didn't get time to shop or do anything other than rush through the city and quickly drive home.
Next time I go to an exhibit (unless it's dinosaurs) I think I'll leave Kaidin. He doesn't like going to those things and it really spoils it for me and Adam - i might have enjoyed the egyptian exhibit if I'd had a chance to really look at things and not constantly be going "Kaidin, don't yell", 'Kaidin, don't wander off", "Kaidin, get up off the floor" etc. etc. I think next weekend we are just going to go for a picnic and a bushwalk up in dwellingup somewhere. maybe to a hobby farm or something.
